REBECCA VAN GENNIP BIOGRAPHY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My paintings explore my experience of navigating loss through the domestic space of home. Home is a place that represents familiarity, allows vulnerability, and the fragility of life is expressed through delicate scenes with uneasy undertones. I investigate the metaphor of the interior as the spaces within my mind, and how personal possessions can be personified to communicate my thoughts. My chosen technique of alla-prima oil painting adds emotional depth with blurry, fluid textures that replicates flashbacks or tear flooded eyes. Currently, this navigation of universal hardships is contemplated through the lens of memories and unpacking generational emotions. I continue to reflect on how intense losses have shaped my life and offer comfort to others through how I visually communicate this inevitable journey.
